The LM-SD is a laser-based distance measurement tool capable of measuring distance with pinpoint accuracy. A given target can be clearly identified with the help of the visible red laser spot. LM-SD is typically used for hot targets less than 1000°C (1832°F) up to a distance of 30 meters (98.4 feet) and for colder objects with a reflective target added for distances up to 100 meters (328 feet).
The principle of operation is based on comparative phase measurement. It emits high frequency modulated light which is diffusely reflected from the target and returns to the instrument with a certain phase shift compared with the emitted signal. The distance can then be determined with millimeter accuracy from the amount of this phase shift.
